Can an effective leader be developed or must they be born with the leadership instinct? There is research that supports both positions; however, based on my experience as a leadership coach, I believe leadership skills can be developed in people.
I just picked up a fascinating book by Brene Brown titled, “Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead”. This book makes the case that we need to embrace our “ability to believe that we are enough.” Easier said than done. How does one do that in our current culture of competition, anxiety, perfectionism and comparison?

Shirley Wulf and I spoke on this topic last week to over 30 women at the Women’s Energy Network in Pittsburgh. We found it inspiring to meet so many women at various professional levels within the energy industry who were excited to learn more about the tools necessary to becoming extraordinary leaders.
